Well I am in some very uncharted water and would really appreciate some help. I have a problem that I have run into with the good ole tan 89. I posted this to my build thread but thought I might get more people seeing this here.

Please forgive me if I use improper terms and if I do not describe enough then just ask and I will answer as best I can.*
So I have a 1350 transfercase doubled to another 1350. And I believe I have a M50d-R1 tranny. The problem that I am having only occurs when I am in 4wd lo/hi and when the doubler is lo/hi. But as I am moving forward it will feel as if it falls out of gear and then I will have no forward movement. Occasionally I will be able to reverse but then when I put it back into first there will be a clicking/winding/spinning sound as if it just doesn’ t want to go into gear. To fix this I have to shift the transfercase from 4wd to 2hi then back down and I will be good to go till it falls out again. Someone told me that it could be the syncros in the tranny but when I looked up those symptoms my tranny doesn’t have any of them. Any input would be great.*

If both transfer cases have to be engaged I would think the problem has to be in one of them.

Yes, in the transfer case not transmission.

What are you using to shift both transfer cases?
Both manual or both electric, or one of each?

Make sure both are consistently getting into gear. Not quite into gear or too far past "in gear" will not work.

So the set up on the actual transfercase, not the doubler part is hand shifted(under the truck, its how it came i am working on getting that better set up) and the doubler is a manual shift from inside the cab. I am pretty sure that I am turning the transfercase into the proper gear being that I will feel it click into position, i wonder if the lever that the PO had set up is incorrect or something like that.

Yes, my bet is that the linkage needs adjustment.

I use a a little pair of vise grips wired in place to hold the 1354 in 4 high. I had to learn what was what. If I left the hubs unlocked, it would drop into 2 wheel . To prevent this the VG is wired in place with a piece of mechanic's wire. I also high lighted the modes and the point of the shaft with some white paint. left to its own devices , the TC will drop into 2 wd :D

So from what I am gathering is that it's most likely a issue with the linkage. Would the fact that after it "falls out of gear" the lever stays in the same 4hi/lo position make it a different problem?

Just a guess here but possibly a worn Shift fork may cause the problem it'll engage but won't hold it in gear same concept of a 5spd droping out of gear not sure how it all works but try looking at a few exploded views of both tcases and see how the actuators work for sure may just shed some light for ya

So I'm gonna pull the tcase and check/swap the shift forks. On a scale of 1-10 besides removal how tough is it? And any pointers.
