I have a 94 4.0 5 speed Ranger. I got it stuck and was romping on it back and forth and in the process i broke a front driverside universal in the axle. When i got the truck out the tranny makes a whining noise the faster you go the faster the whining noise and it isn't as loud in 4th as it is the rest. Would this be an easy fix or should i just replace the tranny? Please Help, Thanx

pocket bearing between the main shaft and the input shaft. trust me fix it or it will cost you more. i did the 5 speed swap on my truck and it had the whine. i let it go hoping to make it for a while while saving funds to fix it. well on my way to work i heard a pop and lost everything but 4th gear. the input and main shaft had welded themselves together and stripped the input shaft.

fix it before it gets worse.my 85 did this extremely bad when i got it but went away in forth only. a bearing only rebuild was roughly $120 from a tranny shop in co. called transtar. but i'm thinking i maybe fried it running w/ 33's and 373 gears-had to rap the hell outta it or i overlooked something when i did the rebuild. so i'm lettn this one go thinkn it mite be a basket case seeing it was filled with milkey sludge when i tore it down the first time and am just waitn for some extra cash and going to the local yard and get a new one.

Well that sounds exactly what happened to the tranny that came out of my truck it lost everything but 4th gear. First of all how the heck do you replace the pocket bearing? Where is it? Is there some pics somewhere or a how to? Another thing i am going to pull a 16 foot tandem axle trailer with my 97 olds cutlass supreme on it this friday. Will that do it in? Thanx for the help!

the trans needs to be completly disasembled it is between the main shaft and the input shaft. there is a teardown how to in the tech library. and it could do it in towing but maybe not.

I had a sound like that but it was a few broken teeth on the 3/4 gears on the input shaft, that was to my tk5 though... I had to tear apart the entire thing, but got it done not super hard to do on manuals if you take your time but autos can become a nitemare.

see i'd much rather tear down autos- theres no need for a press and such. i didn't have a awful time doing my fm145 but it just wasn't a perfered for me. maybe its the fm145, i did a toyota w5 once and that was fun for me.
