does anyone know if the guts from a tranny behind a four cylinder will work in the housing of a tranny from behind a 3.0 six cylinder???

Not a very good idea. More than likely the larger engine would eat the trans meant for a smaller one.

2wd 3.0 with a 5 speed manual lookin at pulling the guts out of a 2.3 2wd 5 speed manual

Which 2.3l? The lima or the Duratec ?

Why? Sounds like you will be taking a step back by putting a weaker trans behind a larger motor.

The internals are not weaker than what he has. He would be going with different ratios if anything. IIRC the 3.0 has the more desirable ratios of any of the M5OD-R1's...meaning a lower first gear ratio.

If the OP had searched, he would have found the internals of the 2.3, 2.9 and the 3.0l M5OD-R1 are all the same. The 4.0l is the only one that is different, but will still fit in any of the other cases. (except the M5OD-R1HD case.)

Why search when you can just ask?

90% correct.

All M5OD-R1 guts will fit in the HD case as well, but you have to use the HD ouput with the HD tailhousing since the seal location moved to accommodate for the VSS sensor. Or reuse a non VSS tail housing and output on the HD case.

For example....

In my Blue truck I have a 4.0HD case, 2.5 4x2 internals (w/ updated syncros), and 3.0 4x4 output and tail housing.

I just built a trans for my green truck that uses a 3.0 case (previously 4x4), and all 2.3 4x2 internals and tail housing.

And like others have mentioned...

Use the damn search function. I know the info is out there because I typed it.lol. Search for M50D Hybrid trans.
