Recently, when I have been driving the Ranger, the O/D light will come on and start flashing indicating a tranny problem. Only once did I experience any problems when it shifted (shifted very hard from 1st to 2nd). I took the truck over to a national transmission shop and they performed a free diagnostic. They told me they pulled the code found no electrical problems so the diagnosis is something is wrong mechanically. They want $400 for removal and diagnosis. From there who knows what it will cost once it gets diagnosed because the cost of repair and parts goes on top of that. The truck is an 2004 that I bought over a year ago for $3200. Its in good shape otherwise, but I don't know if I want to sink that much money into it for a repair. Any thoughts or opinions are welcomed. The truck is a bare bones 2004 XL.

Thanks

Just for your information...if they checked the codes with the light flashing there is a problem..there should of been some kind of code be it gear ratio error bad solenoid and so forth. They not telling you everything and i would find some where else to take it. The reason 1-2 shift was hard was due to the code in the tranny in which it throws the computer into safe mode thus creating a high line pressure all the time.

My personal truck was throwing codes for 3rd gear ratio error and shifting strangely, i replaced the EPC electronic pressure control solenoid and it works great now.

I ended up checking around with some friends and took it to another local garage that they recommended. They specialize in trannys. I'll let you know what they find when they check it out Monday.

Found out it was mechanical. They charged me $300 to drop it and tear it down. Found out they P/O must have had some work done on it,but they never finished it? Guys put a new banner kit, bands, solenoids and other parts totaling over $800 into it and slapped it back in. Runs great now.
