Tranny fluid volume

Hey Folks,

Replaced the Slave cylinder on my '97 2WD SuperCab 5-speed. Mazda M50D-R1 Tranny I believe, and everything went pleasantly well, especially for a first timer. My 1st question at this point though is that the owners manual states fluid volume for the truck to be 5.6 quarts. Advanced Auto's computer had 2.8 quarts indicated.

Subsequently put in a volume of 2.8 quarts, drove it a bit without problems. This discrepancy kept bugging me, however, so I went back to AA and got more fluid to add to the transmission based on the owners manual. I did a little more poking on the threads and followed the advice to visualize the fluid level via the "Fill". Without adding fluid, it was level with the bottom.

SOO...who is right...Ford or AA??? I have no problems shifting or with other function.

Thanks...Eric

Read the owner's manual again CAREFULLY. It says the transmission uses 5.6 PINTS. Which is the same thing as 2.8 quarts.

It isn't what you asked but how I started doing that was filling the tranny to the plug then putting it in the car.

this is the best way of doing especially since you had to pull your transmission.
Unbolt the fill plug set it aside then fill it through the open shifter hole at the top of the transmission then fill until it comes out the hole then put it all back together... DONE!

fill it thought the "fill" hole on the side of the tranny............you can buy a cheap pump and pump it up or you buy a hose and a funnel and you can reach the fill plug thu the engine bay.........when atf starts to come out the fill hole it is done......I thought mine took 3.2 quarts

* and please dont argue with me use Mercon or Mercon V......

Quoted for truth.

I've come up with another way though, but yours is probably easier. You need:

1. An empty 1qt container that had diff lube in it (the one with the conical nozzle and cap on top)
2. A section of clear plastic tubing. The larger diameter the better, up to a point. You'll probably want at least 2 feet of it.
3. Transmission fluid (duh).

Here's the procedure:

1. Cut the end of the nozzle on the cap of the old diff lube container to slighly smaller than the outer diameter of the tubing you've got.
2. Use a little ATF to rinse out all the old diff lube from the container.
3. Cut the end of the tubing at an angle.
4. Insert the tubing through the nozzle you just cut in step 1, so the angled end goes in the container. Pull enough through that the tubing goes to the bottom of the container.
5. Fill the container most of the way full with transmission fluid. Screw the top onto the container with the hose still in it.
6. Go under the vehicle and put the hose in the fill hole of the transmission.

You can now hold the container upright, and squeeze the container to fill the transmission. The advantage is that it won't leak out around the cap and go everywhere. Simply go until you see bubbles in the tube, then refill the container and repeat until you fill the transmission.

Rustyranger that is a good idea using the diff fluid bottle but cut the bottom of it off and run the tube thru the engine bay and use it as a funnel. POC

That would work too, except that those diff fluid bottles always tend to leak around the cap.

I like my suck gun. It was $20 dollars and it works great for everything. Trans, diff, etc.

Just fill it through the fill port until it starts puking back out at you then wait for it to stop running. It's full.
