Tranny clearance around the Y-pipe

The Haynes manual says to remove the exhaust before removing the tranny on V-6 engines. My question is having a 3" body lift on my Ranger (2.9 engine) is it absolutely necessary to remove the exhaust now that I have that clearance between the bell housing and the "tunnel"? I figured if I jack up the tranny and engine, It'll give me the room to clear the exhaust. Is there another reason for the need to remove the exhaust? Thanks

with a manual and the t case removed its pretty easy to get out with a 3 in bl

its not to hard even without a body lift all i do is take a long pry bar and put it between the trans and y pipe slide trans back as far as you can and just wedge it over the y pipe it will kick up the back of trans towards the floor and will pop right over the y pipe to install just stick the uppper front of trans as far foward as you can and use a prybar to pop it back over y pipe worked for me about 6 or 7 times

i've done it without pulling the exhaust. a body lift will make it easy!

Got the tranny out. I couldn't get the top bolts loose on the transfer case so I had to drop the tranny and transfer case together which made it less than ideal. Will try to separate them now and install them back in the truck separately.
