i got a wild idea the other day. a transmission brake using an old motorcycle disk brake. keep it manual and not hydro of course.

anyone done anything like this before? could be a fun project!

I dont get it..:icon_confused: A tranny brake just engages two gears at once so the tranny locks up I believe...sooo What you talkin bout Willis

ha. sorry i'm talking about putting a disk brake inline with the driveshaft. up close to the transfercase. saw it on a toyota and thought it was a pretty trick idea. then my head starts hurting. next to hurt is my wallet

Count me in also, what's the plan?

Just saw your reply. That's the same as my 48/49 Plymouths had for parking brakes. Not a disc brake but a shoe that clamped around the DS.

exactly the idea. i hate how the mechanical e brake cable hangs down and is always in the way.

if i could set this up, i would need to cut a hole in the floor of the truck so the disk would have room, then fab a bracket and rock guard for the disck and caliper. also the caliper would have to be mounted where it is solid to the tranny and not the frame or body. that way the brake setup moves with the tranny as it needs. the driveshaft would obviously need to be shortened, and flanges made for the disk. then a parking brake handle from some donor car would be installed and all routed where its outta the way.

could work pretty well i think. and if i guy blew a brake line, it would work pretty well to slow me down too

I don't think it would be too difficult to put together. the disk does not need to be very large due to the torque multiplication you will get with it being on the driveshaft (depending what axle gears you have). mounting the disk should also not be a problem as you have a flange that the driveshaft bolts up to. The caliper mount should also not be much of a problem, there's all kinds of bolts on the back of the t/case. If you used a caliper that holds the shoes it would simplify things (ie. late eighties early nineties gm rear calipers), it would also give you the option of mechanical or hydraulic operation, (yes you can get hydraulic handbrake handles). I've seen it done on a sammy many years ago but I don't remember much about the installation.
As a side note, point of interest, many lawn tractors that have a transaxle use a disk brake on the transmission that rotates many times faster than the drive wheels, and are quite efective if correctly adjusted, and the disk is only three inches in diameter.

hmm. so its an idea!!! i have a couple of projects in front of it, but i'll keep you guys updated if i get something together!

why not just get a real trans brake that will probably work much better than what you're talking about doing?

well for one i want something mechanical. and seperate from any other system in case of tranny failure, brake failure... things of that nature.

i'm not familure with the in's and out's of an actually tranny brake, but i think it gets pretty complicated, considering it would have to be fabbed up.

i'll check out those links soon, gotta get to the garage so i can play at the cinders today!!!

can one of the admin's change the title of this thread to pinion brake. might make future search's a bit easier for people if it is titled correctly
