I just picked up a 93 ranger. The tranny has been replaced with a non overdrive tranny andf the transfer case that was attached to it. Could this make the 4x4 not work? Also what OD trannies and transfer cases will interchange with my truck? Thanks.

I forgot to mention that its a 93 ext. cab with a 4.0

Is the 4x4 activated with a button? It should just be a wiring problem or a burnt shift motor if it won't go into 4x4. Any trans that also came behind a 4.0 will work. The trans has to come out of another 4x4 for the transfer case to bolt up. 2wd trannys won't work without disassembling most of the trans to swap parts. Are you looking for an automatic or manual transmission?

The trans/transfer case came out of a explorer. It feels like it engages in low range, but the front doesn't lock in. I ran a diagnosis check and it is giving a Overdrive code where it isn't a OD tranny I'm guessing. Is there something else that I can check?

Explorers ALWAYS came with overdrive trannies. The overdrive is electronically engaged, so there's probably an electrical problem with that circuit.

Check if the driveshaft is turning when in 4wd, maybe the hubs are bad, that's a common prob. if it goes in low range, it probably is working in high range, unless somethings broke in the transfer case - like the chain or something.

Are you sure the tranny has been replaced? or does the overdrive just not work?
If it's been replaced it might be a c-5 auto out of a bronco2, you could sell that to someone here maybe or they might trade you for their al4d overdrive tranny.

the c-5 is more dependable, though IMO, just no OD. I have that in my truck.

yeah the guy that I got it from said that he replaced it. Also the gear indicator is off, when you put it OD it shows that it's in D instead. And when you pull the shifter down into 1 then gear up it goes into 2 then D and thats it, plus it tachs around 4500 at 70 mph.

ok I spoke with the guy that I got the truck from and he said that it did come out of a bronco 2. Is anyone interested in the tranny/transfer case? I use this as a DD and need the overdrive. I checked and the driveshaft does turn, so it must be the hubs. I also have a 94 for sale or trade, I would take somw decent wheels with aggressive tires(31s ,33s) as a partial trade for it also. Thanks.
