I just dropped the pan for a fluid and filter change of the A4LD transmission in my 1987 Ranger. I expected to find a magnet in the bottom recess, but none was there. Was the transmission delivered with a magnet when it was built? I suspect that the fluid was changed at some time in the truck's life. Should I purchase a magnet and leave it in the pan?

Thanks!

Take an old computer hard drive apart, the magnets in them are amazingly strong.

Someone probably took the magnet out to clean it off while changing the fluid and never put it back in. I would get a new one, they do serve a pretty useful function.

Thanks. I did find a magnet and dropped it in the pan before I buttoned it up.
