i have a 3 year old female german short hair. she is an amazing dog. i have completely trained her off leash from when she was a puppy. but for some reason every once in awhile she will just take off full speed running through the neighborhood. she will be 20 feet from me scream at her to come and sometimes will even look back while in a full sprint and just keep going. when i put a leash on her she does does more than perfect. walks on my right side doesnt go out in front of me. no pulling on the leash nothing. and that is usually what happens when i walk her without a leash. but these random burst of running off is getting old.

today she took off right before i had work and i couldnt be late so i just left. i got a call 3.5 hours later from a lady that found her one street over. she is extremely smart too bc sometimes when she takes off for a couple hours she always comes back. but i drives me crazy bc during those 3 hours idk if she is getting hit by a car or not bc she also like to run out into the street all the time.

most people would say lack of exercise. but that is not the case with this dog. she get 1-2 walks everyday and every weekend i take her to my farm and run her for a good 6 hours or til her feet bleed(which only takes about an hour or 2 of running in the snow and ice).

point of the story is i am borrow an electric collar. its the only thing i can think of that will most likely work. i wanted to see if anyone else out there has trained gps's with an electric collar and had tips for do's and dont's.

as i said before she is a very smart dog learns stuff very quickly accept for his is the only problem i have with the dog. this is the 2nd gps i have owned. the other one we lived in a place where it didnt matter if it ran loose.

Well, they arent German Short hairs, but I use use shock collars on my hound dogs. They are very smart dogs too, and I have them trained pretty good. But I have one 11th month old Redbone that likes to go off and do his own thing when we're hunting and he's outta the box, or he'll bark when I dont want him to. I'll just give him a little zap and usually he'll stop barking, or come back to me, depends on what I zaped him for. If it doesn't work, I turn the shock collar up a notch or two, and that'll always do it.

Shock collars definitly work, and eventually, they will figure out not to do what they're getting zapped for. It just takes some time, just like training your dog any other way.

yeah thats what i figured. i just have heard horror stories of electric collars ruining dogs. she is honestly a great dog. she can be out easily a 100 yards and i can call her back. but its just when she gets in those take off sessions she just doesnt listen. and i would love to get to the point where i dont have to use the collar anymore. hopefully she will figure it out quick.

anyone else got gps on here?

This time of year dogs can go a little crazy. It's hormonal. Even spayed bitch will seek out males and vicaversa. I don't think it's reserved for your dog or breed. Just a thought.

Yeah, I've heard some stories too, you just have to use them sparingly. All my dogs had to have collars when they were young, but they've all grown out of it. So, I'm sure your's will learn quick.
Good luck:icon_thumby:

I almost had a german shorthaired that i rehabed for the humane society that i used to volunteer at but since hunting was in her blood she tried to bite one of my ferrets so i couldnt keep her. Lukily one of the women from the humane society took her.......too bad she was amazing

yeah they are great dogs. mine is ok with cats and i actually had ferrets for awhile and she was ok with them too. but she will chase anything that wants to run. she did kill a field mouse last weekend tho lol and has killed a couple squirrels. but if you tell her to be easy she is.

I learned how to train dogs from my dad. I don't like dogs, but we always had them when I was a kid. My dad had coon hounds, beagles and such--dogs weren't pets, they used them to live. A bad dog meant you missed a meal--or more. They shot dogs that didn't follow the party line.

Anyway, there is no mercy for disobedience--that's the first rule of dog training. The second is to heap praise and reward on obedience. Neither rule is negotiable--you must be reliable on them to have a reliable dog. Even as puppies you have to smack their asses for mistakes and praise them for good deeds. And you have to spend a lot of time with them--they need MOST of your time. Raising a good good is more intense than raising a child. Dogs grow up in a year, not 15 years. The reason I hate dogs is because people buy them and don't give them that complete commitment and then they become problems. I've had dogs attack my chickens, attack my cat, chase my kids into the house, bark all night--these are other people's dogs--I don't have one. I hate dogs. But I really appreciate a good dog.

Your dog thinks it's the Alpha. You were too easy on it and there is no saving it. You have to keep it leashed. It will never be reliable. The shock collar will work, but it's fear. It's not the same as having a dog that instinctively obeys.

well you obviously dont know me. so dont me so quick to assume stuff. trust me she got her ass kickings quite a bit. she is def not aphla anything in my house or even with other dogs. everyone comes up to me asking to train their dogs bc she is so well behaved. this is just one small problem that doesnt happen that often. trust me there is plenty of time to "save" the dog. she is only 3. they do most their learn from 8months to 2 years but she still learns new stuff all the time. i was just seeing if other people.

bc shooting a dog isnt putting fear into it.....

fear and pain is how you show a dog whats wrong from right

I have 2 GSP's, one 3 yrd female and a 1.5 yrd male. Best thing you can do is buy a GOOD shock collar. I use the Tritronics G3 combo. I have no problems, you really only have to shock them a couple times, then they know what to do. I rarely put it on anymore. They listen great without it.
I know what your dealing with though, unless you have a German shorthair, you really dont understand. lol. Good luck man!

finally someone that understands lol. you understand when i say "they listen great and behave really well, but they sometimes rarely like to take off and just runnnnnn." i am actually going to borrow a collar from my aunt bc i am broke and dont have money for it. but yeah fingers crossed and i want to get her back in control asap. i did have her at napa today and no leash and she never left my side. inside she is amazing. but its like i said that rarely freak time outside sometimes she just takes off
