On the 2004 ranger the turn signal and brake lights are on the same wires. My trailer needs the brake wire to be a seperate wire. Is it necessary for me to run a wire from the brake controler at the front of the truck or is there somewhere else i can tap into or change in the back to make this easier?

If the truck does not have the trailer tow package, yes you will have to run a wire to the back. It isn't that hard to do. Just an inconvenience.:)shady

trailer wiring

Thats the thing it does have the trailer package so most of what i need is there i just need an independent brake wire.

Why does it need a brake wire seperate? Even the fullsize travel trailers use a brake/turn wire as one?

Or are you trying to run a brake controller?

Its a European trailor. I work for the military in Germany and the truck has the US wiring hookup im just adding the Euro hookup for this trailer. In the end i'll have 2 wire couplings at the hitch.

What connector does the truck have? How many pins? The brake wire to the connector is usually blue.:)shady

His original post says he has a controller.:)shady

trailor lights

It has 4. When i tested them the blinker wires doubled as brake wires and then i had a regular driving light the last wire didn't give me 12 volts when the brake was applied. Its possible that it was a negative trigger wire though. The connector has 3 female and one male plug in a row.

The above site has several standard wiring diagrams. If you have a brake controller on the truck, I don't understand why there is not a wire going to the back. The 4 pin connector you are working with has no brake connection.

If the truck has a trailer package from the factory, they normally come with a 7 pin connector attached to the rear bumper.

If your trailer needs the brakes separated to the tail lights, you will need another device to split out the circuits.

You may need one of these:

No ranger EVER came with a 7-pin connector, with the tow package they got a 4 flat, without the tow package they got nothing.

The blue wire is not for brake lights, the blue wire is what sends the voltage back for the electric brakes on the trailer.

You need a 2-3 adapter available at any trailer suppy store.

Thanks for the assist gentlemen. I'll try and find the adapter over here or order it from the states. All the best.

Thats good to know. That is why I said "normally" as I wasn't really sure.

Yes, that is what I was referring to, I should have been more clear.

How will this separate out the brake from the turn signal?:)shady
