Trail Vehicle Recovery??

Ok here is my question. When youre out in the middle of nowhere half way through a trail and shit breaks, how do you get your rig out of the mess. If there was no way to fix and drive it out that is. Anyone got interesting tow stories??

buddy busted both ball joints on his RF of his cherokee. We removed Junkyard Dogs hood and layed the RF on the hood and slid it the mile out to the trail head and got it on the trailer.

(Why did a unbroken truck have to sacrifice his hood as a slider? I would have voted that the broken truck use his own hood as a slip&slide)

I fear the day this stuff happens to me, but I am not so ignorant to think it won't. Thankfully I have a veryvery good vehicle recovery tool when the time comes. If you have been to my cardomain you have probably seen the orange farm tractor, that thing is amazing.

I got an idea. What if you were to makeshift your truck into a tow truck? Ok well the way im thinking is to take your winch cable and route it over the hood into the bed and make it into a tow truck. Of course you would need some pully's to avoid rubbing the line on your body and to get enough lift for the broken vehicle but I think that could be a simple and effective way to get a broken truck out of the trails.

Uh, I would have to say tow it.

I have a few stories my dad has told. He wheeled a Jeep for probably 5 years, then after he sold that, about 5 years later bought a Samurai and we wheeled that for another 5.
One was; A guy in a jeep broke 3 out 4 drivelines (could not drive anymore becuase one wheel with an open diff doesn't work). The trail was pretty bad so they took two Landcrousers (Fj40 style) and straped them together an then strapped the rear one to the Heep. the basicly just made a 3 vehicle train. Nothing interesting, just how they got it out.

Another was when my Uncle did something to his Jeep out on the trail ('what', I don't remember) and their friend was towing him out and my uncles front bumper was barely snagged on a big tree going around this corner and thier friend just kept giveing it throttle to get it to slide around it. Well, my unlce picks up the cb and yells "Woow (is that how you would spell it?) woow", and their frind thought he yel "go" so he gassed it, and it just picked the side of my uncles Jeep up and laid it on it's side...

And then onther time, my dad could not get his Jeep to run out on the trail (figures) so they towed it to the road and then just put my dad in front and another Jeep would come up behind and hit the spare tire and nudge him forward. he said they did that at 65 mph... just running and getting rammed by another Jeep.

good stories, wouldnt have thought of using the hood. While on the subject I would like to get front and rear receivers. Should I have a guy I know Fab up some bumpers(200 a piece) or is there a cheaper, easier, way to do it (perhaps someone makes bolt in front recievers) and just retain the stock bumpers?? I would like a cradle mount winch eventually which is why I ask.

I put this together when I was bored one day, anticipating a truck disabling incident on the trails. I have a front receiver hitch and my favorite wheeling friend is installing one.

We have yet to try it out, we haven't even been out wheeling, much less had a breakdown. I am interested to see how it will stand up. I could be useful in a knarly mudhole or obstical as well, because you can push AND pull each other, requires good communication thought. I worry I may mangle it with the 5.0L......

I always try to carry enough “shit” to fix my junk and make it out of the woods. I have had to be towed out a few times, leave the truck in the bush one night and come back with parts the next day.

In my years of wheelin here in the great white north there are way to many stories to type up about broken rigs and how we have got them out of the woods.

When the worst happens though leaving the rig then coming back with parts and tools to fix it has always worked. And this by no means is a simple or quick solution but it works.

we cant do that around here....morons will loot,shoot,pick and torch the rig. only a hand full of places its ok to leave your junk. i dont try to break crap but if it ever happens i wont leave my rig

I can't think of a miracle repair on my truck before. The big parts tend to remain intact. Radiator, hubs, axles, driveshafts, tires--that's about it. I've done other structural damage but never noticed it until I was home and pressure washing.

A big reason why I like Attica is that you are always a very short distance from a road so it's easy to get a strap or even bring your trailer in fairly close if you have to take it out on the stretcher.

Ya your right. I guess I take it for granted the area that I live in. I never lock my house, truck, whatever. Im not at home right now and no one is home and nothing is lockedand nothing will happen.
