trail rig ??

i have seen a few trail rigs (on t.v and in mags) with a small winch hooked to ther rear axle above the diff. i was wondering what this is used for???

I usually see it hooked to the front axle. It's to keep the suspension from unloading (throwing all the vehicle's weight onto the rear) as you climb up a steep incline. This improves handling and stability.

Traction bars are for axle wrap which only leaf spring axles can suffer from.

Axle hop is when a truck is trying to climb a rock obstical (or concrete, or whateve') and it gains&looses traction rapidly and repeatedly. Lotsa rock crawling vids on youtube show this. This also shock loads driveline the same as axle wrap, but a traction bar can't help you if your ona crazy steep hill.

And ya, like the other guys said, there is all-sorts of reasons why this is done in the sport.

Axle wrap is generally what causes the axle hop. Yes, traction bars do help with this.
