Traded my Explorer

Keep the stock tire size and you will be fine. The 3.8 is a little under powered but it is pretty reliable. They have been in the minivans for years. Make sure and stay on top of any water leaks if you have never owned a Jeep before. You would think they would have figured it out by now but I still see them every day in for a water leak. I have seen some interiors totally ruined because they didn't drive it often and didn't know there was 3 inchs of standing water.

The 3.8 has been around (and underpowered) since 1991.... the only reason why it made its way into the JK wranglers was due to safety/crash regulations IIRC.

Crash regulations? How is the v6 safer than the straight 6? I assumed it was emissions and CAFE standards.

I love the new Jeeps. My dad is getting a new Rubicon in the spring, hopefully I will get to drive it every now and then.

i belong to a jeep club here in OK, and alot of guys have the newer jk's, and they do great off road, even better with a few mods.

i went wheeling a few months ago with a few guys, me in my wagoneer, 6inch lift, 33's, 360v8. one guy was in a tj, 6inch lift, 33's, axle swaps, lockers, tons of crap on his, v6.
other guy was in a completely stock jk, with bfg m/t's. he went everywhere we did, except where ground clearance was too low. he also only had a 4cyl.

so they are very capable in stock form. a few guys in the club still have their paper tags on in some of the trail runs.

get some good a/t's, i like the bfg's, but everybody has a preferance. upgrade the exhaust, air intake, get a programmer, and you will be golden.

the I-6 is a "Long" motor, motors don't crumple.

The V-6 is far more compact, allowing for more room upfront for the body to crumple before shoving the engine into the firewall.

I'm sure Emissions/CAFE had a role as well, but I had read a few articles to the effect that safety was a primary issue.

I am hoping it shows me good service, I guess time will tell.
