so I'm still working on this, I've replaced the rear main seal, the valve covers with the blue felpro and I still have a leak that appears at the bottom of the bell housing right bellow the transmission inspection cover. Any ideas....I want so much to get this taken are of on our truck.

I still got an uneasy feeling that it may be the rear main again, maybe I didn't get it in there right, though I followed the instructions to the letter. can a rear main seal be bad out of the box? One thing is for sure I do believe tht the valve covers were leaking some because before there was a drip of oil coming from the oil filter, now there's nothing, all clean.

Hey Jordan,

Glad you liked the valve covers, haven't had a chance to respond to your PM. Been on vacation all week and have been spending a lot of time out in the garage.

Sometimes the end of the crankshaft can slightly wear "out" over years and needs sleeved. Also, did you get a chance to see if it was coming from the base of the distributor as IMenriched suggested? If it's a rear main leak, usually you'll only see it leaking from the very bottom of the bell. Otherwise, can you find any other traces of it?

Pete

it looks as if it's coming from right inside the inspection cover not in front of it, so that's what makes me think it might be the rear main seal again. School me please, on what you mean by sleeved, is that something that can be done by just pulling the transmission to access the rear of the engine. I'm so not want to pull the engine again if I can avoid it.

google speedi sleeve, it will tell you all you need, pretty simple. you may even be able to call the auto store with the seal number and they can tell you what speedi sleeve you need.

I've done a quick search and can't find anything for the trusted 2.9 Liter, plenty of info about the GT

that may be it, the pic is kind of messed up. the speedi sleeves go by size not by engine, there is almost def one that will fit your crank. just call a really good parts store, not advance or pep boys, more like an industrial one and tell them the seal number and ask for a speedi sleeve. i deal with them alot because i look up parts for heavy equipment, we almost always sell one with a new seal, its just cheap insurance

here is a pdf file of their catalog by size
vsmus-origin.skf.com/Files/Brochures_in_PDF/457892.pdf

copy and paste the link

SKF looks a bit different from what Felpro offers, it also looks as if SKF includes the install tool.

my next step is to indeed determine if the leak is coming from the rear main seal....another clue is that there is a stream that rund at the very rear of the oil pan, but most of the oil is coming from behind the inspection cover on the transmission.

did you use the double lip main seal? did you ever look at the rear valley gasket like i suggested?(and the nearby dist o-ring like was sugg.) especially if you used a felpro lower intake gasket instead of ford.

just be glad you have a 2wd,pulling the trans is fast with air tools.when you get em back apart take a light and look to see where the highest point of the leak is in the bell.
