Hi all;

My '84 Ranger 2WD w/2.8 and has the Toyo Kogyo 5 speed (oops--4 speed w/overdrive), it's approaching 200,000 miles.
It's been a reliable tranny, but I'm starting to hear some "new" sounds, so I'd like to take care of it before it leaves me stranded.

Have considered:

1. replacing with a new one
- but I can't find one

2. rebuilding the present one
- but am in sticker-shock at estimates of $1500-2000 from local tranny
shops. Apparently the Toyo Kogyo is an oldie, parts are hard to find

3. swap with a newer model
- but with what ??

Guys I'd really appreciate your help !!

1. You're right about being hard to find. Took me right at 3 months to find a 4x4 T-K5 for my Bll and the input shaft was bad in it. So took 2 made one.

2. Tranny shop quoted me $600+ to rebuild mine.

3. From what I've read here in the forums, a M5OD is the best tranny. The FM-145 and FM-146 would also work. Any tranny from a 2.9 or 4.0 will bolt up to the 2.8. The 3.0 has a different bolt pattern. You would have to change the driveshaft because the trannys are different lengths. I'm not sure, but I think the FM-145 is the same length as the T-K5.

Yeah - FM145 should work as a suitable replacement if you can find it. No driveshaft changes.

The Mazda is a FAR better unit. Off the top of my head you'd have to adapt to the different slave cylinder, have your driveshaft shortened (or just find a new one at a yard), and adjust your floor plate for the shifter. Probably a few more things I'm forgetting. AllanD could hook you up with the right info.

I would suggest getting a 2wd M5OD from behind any 94 and older 4.0 (that way you can still connect your speedometer). Although you can use one from behind any 4.0 the newer ones just wont have the hole and gear for the speedometer (but you can swap a tailshaft on and the speedo gear in easy enough from an older one, and there are plenty of people you could get those from).

M50D tranny

OK, thanks guys for the info!!

but another question......

Can I get one from a Mazda truck?? If so, what years, engine size, etc.
I know absolutely nothing about Mazdas.

Read somewhere that many parts are common in the Ranger vs. Mazda trucks, perhaps my choices increase if I can score a tranny from one of those ??
