I have a 1989 Ford Ranger Custom.. It has a 2.9 v6 and is an automatic. I'm really wanting to try and get a boat for me and my Fiancee to take fishing on the lake... I was wondering what size or what kind boat would be the safest to try and tow with this truck of ours.

Need more info. Lifted, tire size, gear ratio? I have a 99 lifted 2wd with 33's and 4.10 gearing 4.0 motor. We have 2 flats boats. I have a 15 ft and a 17 ft . One is aluminum and the other is 'glass. I take a boat to a lot of places when we go boating. The 2.9 will pull a 15-16 ft boat very easy. I had an 89 BII with the 2.9 and my 16 ft boat towed very well. Really huge steep hills were a bit of a fuss thou when I was out in California with my 83 Ranger 4x4. But after a gear change that solved the problem.

If you are thinking ski boat, bass boat forget it. A nice aluminum 12-16 ft fishing boat will be ok, but if you want anything larger it will pull it for a while but thats about it. I pulled a guys bass boat with my 4.0, did ok but you could tell there was something out back and it really didn't like it.
