Towing a ranger with a ranger

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I used to defend it until mine puked. I don't think it's that bad of a tranny. It just had a flaw in I think a pump bushing. A soft rebuild doesn't work, you have to know what you're doing--just can't throw parts at it. It's not a weak tranny. I know they can be built to last. I would completely trust a 4R55E/5R55E.

your right zorro. your 2 transmissions are the definite answer.

never mind the hundreds of thousands of gen 1, 2, and 3 trucks with what is likely a combine tens, if not hundreds of billions of miles on A4LD's all over the continent. no no, your two transmissions are the end-all-say-all on the subject.

please.

im not denying that the A4LD is a weak box...it is. but you cant see the future any better than i. you cant state that the second he starts to roll with this setup his trans is going to fall out of the bottom of the truck and inch its way to wherever it is that small animals go to die. ive personally seen A4LD's tow and haul massive amounts of weight for many a mile with no fuss...they are also reputed to be able to stand up to 300HP with proper preperations. ive also seen many puke while driving around with an unloaded rig.

maintainence, mileage, and driving style are all deciding factors. it helps that this is a later model A4LD fronted by a 4.0 in question. both of these factors attribute to the trans. having several reliability upgrades from earlier years.

Yeah, that A4LD transmission is such a monster. I can't believe the Ranger is only rated at 6000lbs, it could out-tow an F450 going up a 10% hill in overdrive.
Get that truck.

Hey, didn't that one guy say he towed his ranger home with an Escort after he got some bad gas. :D
That's right, he even said it was ok.

Maybe the OP should just get a scooter. I've been told you can mod them enough to tow 747s.
Because getting the right rig from the beginning is only for losers.

I wasn't actually TELLING him to tow it with an Escort.
I was just throwing that into the thread.

No worries, just a cheap shot at Wicked. Getting the right tool for the job is so overrated.:haha:

woa? im going to have a 87 2.9 with a standard trany and i was wondering how much it can tow and or payload not a big deal btu just good numbers to know for me

under 150k on the trany and under 4k on the engine (rebuilt) if it matters.

GCWR wiht 3.73 =6000 lbs
3.45 =5000 lbs
subtract trucks empty weight from that to get trailer wt.

At least Wicked has some personal experience BOTH ways. Your not the only person on the planet you know. I've seen kindergarten kids act more mature than you. You got two bad trannies. End of story

thank you for finnaly shutting him up he was kinda getting annoying i would tow with an a4ld you just gotta ne smart about it get a gage an watch it check check check your fluids down shift thoes 1 and 2 on the dash can be your friend especally with a rebuild upwards of 1000 =]

Going by the vehicles GVWR will not give you the max tow rating.

A 2.9L Ranger will pull more then 1500lbs. If the GVWR is 5000lbs and the truck weighs 3500, it will pull more then that, even safely.

That is the way your supposed to figure it out.

Best thing i can tell you to do is try it. If it feels uncomfortable then dont do it.

I pulled 11,000lbs with my 96 F150, its rated for like 6000. It was not in the least bit uncomfortable and felt like it could handle much more then that. It even stopped with w/o trailer brakes just fine.

later,
Dustin

GVWR is the maximum amount the truck can weigh. its not supposed to tell you how much you can tow...its supposed to tell you how much you can haul (GVWR minus empty truck weight equals useful payload).

GCVWR is the one that specifies how much your vehicle can tow and haul.

I towed a 96 regular cab 2.3L bagged with my 98 2.5L lifted on 33's with 4.10's. Towed it about an hour when I bought it.
