tourque strut?

I've got a 93' 4x4 4.0 and I have the engine out right now rebuilding it and when I pulled it I had to remove a tourque strut it looked like on the driver side. It has a bracket that bolted in front of the motor mount and goes out toward the wheel well and has a small strut connecting the bracket to the frame. My question is do I have to put that back on? It's obvious that it's there to keep the engine from tourquing over, but do I really need it on there?

Not it's not "obvious" it's there to keep the engine from "torquing over"

It's obvious that you haven't thought it through....

The MOTOR MOUNTS stop the engine from "torquing over",
but for the motor mounts to do their job must be flexible.

but the 4.0 tends to shake a bit that shock absorber damps the
shake.

Basically it's a "noise/vibation/harshness" thing...

Wilton's '93 Explorer doesn't have it because the mounting bracket
for the ABS pump uses the same three bolt holes in the frame

I'm sure if given a choice between ABS and a little shift lever shake
Wilton would choose ABS....

As would most 4.0 owners.

The main thing that shock and it's bracket do is make it a ROYAL-PITA
to replace the power steering lines.

MY 4.0 doesn't have one either, but my 4.0 engine came from an ABS equipped
1993 explorer. and while my '87 Ranger doesn't have ABS my frame doesn't have the mounting holes for the frame bracket even if I was inclined to deal with the pesky bracketry for a shock that has probably lost it's fluid anyway...

for amusement value you should check the price on that little shock:)

I figured it would be there for dampening vibration or the tourquing over.

So it looks like it wont be on there when the engine goes back in. It wont be such a PITA to hook the power steering lines back up.

Please stop using the phrase "torqueing over".

It sets my nerves on edge like someone saying "backpressure"

Within the flex range of the engine mounts will allow the engine to move in torque reaction to acceleration (even when "free revving").

IF a motor mount breaks (usually the rubber seperating from the steel backing)
And the motor mount isn't built with a safety block (4.0 mounts are) the engine will flop back and forth on the remaining mount.

That litle shock absorber ain't gonna do squat against the motion a broken mount will allow. it is for damping higher frequency movements of far smaller amplitude.
and as I said it likely isn't going to do that because in all likelihood a 17year old shock is dead, and frankly I wish you luck finding a replacement.

I'll give you a hint, I paid less for ALL FOUR Blistein shocks on my Ranger than I was quoted for ONE of those engine damper shocks.

That little shock was leaking on my 94 and I wasn't going to try for a new one.

I did find that it is the same shock they used on the older Taurus SHO engines and a friend of mine had a couple laying around, like new since the are mounted under the hood away from road crap and water.

Works fine.

No need to be so anal about what I call it. Like I already said, I wont be putting it back on the truck so I'm not really worried about finding a replacement.

Actually, i disabled my ABS over a year ago and like it much more. It didnt work that hot anyway. So i have no ABS and shifter shake. But its a DD/Weekend wheeler now, and it doesnt bother me at all. Just lets me know the trucks still running.

Thanks for the explanation!

If a guy searches on here, just about any question on a Ranger has already been asked!
