Torsion Bars

how many miles on the truck? Might be time for new bars. My old B grade bars at only 70k are worn out and sagging like a mother. Repalced them with #1 grade bars(highest spring rate) and it's been smooth sailing the past 35k.

Would those be Sport Trac torsion bars? I read a while ago that they were stiffer than Ranger bars.

No. Somebody else said that here a long time ago though.

#1 bars are the stiffest avaliable on a Ranger. Sport Trac? idk.

Part numbers are VIN based...so when you go order new bars, you need to give the dealer the VIN of a truck that has #1's stock.

How can you tell? What's the difference in the bars? My truck has 183k on it and I believe it still has the factory bars.

I second! how do you tell like my trucks a level 2 and have never been cranked and the front end has squatted quite a bit..

i figure outta any ranger the fx4 level 2 would have #1 bars..:annoyed:

The fourth digit of the VIN give the gross vehicle weight but not a clue as to what torsion bar is used. The 2000 shop manual lists only three bars available, the B, F and 1. Again, no hint of the rating. Think the Explorers have about 10 different bars. Can scan anything in anytime if anyone would be interested.

Do you think FRPP would have it listed? they have all springs and rates listed for the stang... like i have the 8500-c springs in the garage i never put on the pony..

FRPP really doesn't much for the Ranger from what I've seen. Best thing to do for future reference in so many Ford related items is to just down load the latest catalog. Lots of good info in there.
www.fordracingparts.com should get you to the down load a catalog section.

The springs you have on all of your trucks is listed on the Vehicle Certificate on the door jamb. Lower level, almosts to the right side under DSO is SPR and then below that are the code numbers/letters. This is what BobR. TOTY had to say about it over at one of the Explorer forums

"Just read the spring code on the cert label on the door jamb. The torsion bar code is the first digit and the leaf spring code is the second digit. My Level II has "1C" which is the highest rate torsion bars and highest rate leaf pack available on Rangers. Later Fords (2004+??) use a digit for each corner, so the equivalent LII code for newer Rangers would be "11CC".

Hope this helps - Dave

Sport tracs come with #1 bars, the same as FX4's.

Yep.....open your door and look at the sticker. Under 'SPR', it'll give you a 2 digit or 4 digit code. Should look like these: BBKK BK 11KK 1C FFKK FK

First set would be the front code/spring rating. Second would be the rear leaf code/spring rating. For Example, on my truck, on the sticker it's BBKK, B bars(mid grade), K leafs(weakest of the 2 different leafs on 98+ 4x4's). I swapped to #1 bars, so now I'm technically a 11KK truck.

What determines what bars you get depends on the build of the truck(engine, trans, cab style, option packages). All Fx4 L2's have 1's. Generally, Supercab 4.0 4x4 trucks got B's and 1's. My buddys truck is exactly like mine(options, etc) except he's an auto, and his truck had 1's.

I've noticed that trucks with a factory ordered/optioned tow package got the C's. C's are the strongest, highest spring rate avaliable on the Rangers. Trucks that didn't come with that package, got B's.

I need to learn about 98+ coilspring rangers to find out their rating system.

It would make sense the Sport Tracs have #1's...being so weighty and all.

Hey Dave/Mac, would you happen to know anywhere that tells you what the actual spring rates are for the codes? I think I've read somewhere that #1's are 675lb?

So I've been trying to sort this out for awhile,

My 07 4x4 Sport supercab 4.0 has B rated bars. If I want better (ie: flexier) performance after cranking the bars 2" what bar do I want to change to? I know coilovers is probably the best option of all but for now it's t-bars....

I know the shock length needs to addressed as well, but one thing at a time and the torsion bars ride like ass after being cranked.

Sorry to kinda jack the thread but I've been watching this thread to see if my answer comes up here....

I have a SPR code of BK, that tells me i've got B grade bars then? What about the K?

The K would be your leaf springs...
