Does anyone know what torque wind-up is? my owners manual says this is caused by driving the truck in 4X4 on hard surfaces. what damage can it cause in the drive train.
You've gotta be talking about drive-train bind up.
It's just when the front end turns and all the axles and driveshafts and everything get into a bind....... and you get that fun wheel-hop sensation. It's a lot of extra wear and tear.....
To avoid this, don't run 4wd on pavement.......... and if you have to, don't turn very sharp.
Torque wind-up sounds more like a grammatical error in your owners manual.
Torque wind-up is essentially the same as drivetrian bind.
While turning in a circle, the front tires travel a bigger circle than the rear tires, that means the front tires have to spin faster than the rears while turning.
While locked in 4wd with optimal traction on all 4 wheels, the front and rear axles can only spin at the same speed. The turning torque from the front and rear driveshafts bind in the t-case.
This is not something to take lightly as it can and will cause serious damage; breaking differentials, twisting driveshafts, exploding t-cases, I've even seen it twist the frame of a K5.
Thanks Guys-Around here when it snows the road goes from bad places for a while to good road, back to bad & so on. I didnt know if i could leave the 4wd in or evertime i hit good road for a while i needed to take it out of 4wd. This is my first 4wd truck & i really am enjoying it-95 Ranger xlt supercab 4x4 4.0/auto. The driver side hub was bad & I just put a set of Warn manual locking hubs on.I didn't want to tear them up or anything else
Just leave the hubs locked, and your t-case is a shift-on-the-fly set-up. Just push the button for what ever you need (at moderate speed of coarse).
Those hubs take one hell of a beating, but don't abuse em.
Leaving them locked, besides 1-2 mpg, will have no bad effects on your truck. As long as there's oil in your front diff, and you haven't put a locker or spool in.
