where exactly was the dirt that you found and what was your tranny doing/not doing that made you pull it in the first place? and yes if you suspect the converter is bad replace it although most JY trannies should still have one attached.if the dirt was just in the bell and you fluid didn't look nasty and it still shifted fine, drain it, replace the filter and seal and stick it back together. when you stick the convert back to the tranny be sure to lube the seal and the converter shaft with ATF. and make sure the converter goes all the way in and "locks", it won't lock as in not come out but you will here something like a click when it engages the pump drive. you might have to spin the converter a little to get positive engagement
if it's like the C6 i smoked, you probably tore up your clutches, when you get the junkyard donor be sure to check the fluid, no telling how long it sat on the shelf. i got one out of the wrecking yard and had to have it built anyway because the clutches were toast. the build on mine was $1300, which included an overhaul[ new clutches, valve body flush and complete cleaning] stageII shift kit, low stall torque converter, and labor to remove/replace.
