Torque converter question

After pulling the trans on my 98 4x4 ranger when I didn't tighten the flexplate bolts, Im having trouble seating the torque converter the three stages thats needed. I have got it all the way on a couple of times and when I did, spinning the tc it felt like it was rumbling. On the second stage the tc spins smooth. When I finally get it to seat all the way, it feels like its rumbling or bumpy. Should it be a bit choppy or should it spin smooth? Any help or suggestions would be a big help.

I haven't done your specific trans but yes, you need to click it in while spinning the converter until it will not go in any farther and in that position it may "feel" like it is rubbing.

When you put the trans in place and bolt it to the block the torque converter will slide forward slightly when bolted to the flex plate so would no longer rub.
The key here is to get the torque converter "out of the way" so bell housing can bolt to the block without forcing torque converter back into the trans................and breaking the front pump

On the 5R transmissions that rumbling is good. When the converter seats in on the last place it rubs the bolts for the bell housing. That is the rumbling. It will pull away just enough to not be touching them when you tighten it to the flex plate.
