Can someone tell me what that plastic submarine or torpedo-shaped thing is that's up close to the firewall, to the passenger's side of the plenum, on my '89 2.9? There's a little rigid vacuum(?) hose that seems to be unattached from somewhere...

Thanks!

It's not clear what you're referring to, is there a way you could take a picture and post it here?

It’s a vacuum canister. For what I’m not sure.

I bet he is referring to this. Vaccuum canister?

Yep, that's the thing.

There's hoses coming out 3-ways out of some sort of small device with foam around it, right adjacent to the thing, with one going into that canister. Out of that little device, one goes back towards the firewall, but is not currently connected to anything.

Pete,

Please see my more recent post, if you would - I think I did something wrong with my intake manifold gasket replacement...

its a vacuum resorvoir for your heater controls. without it, your heat will turn on (off?), and vent controls will default to defrost when you stomp on the gas.

this item controls the manual controls of the air vents inside the cab. when you change from defrost mode to say...floor mode, this tank holds the vacuume needed to change the settings..or doors inside the cab. i have a 94 ranger and the picture is exactly where mine is. if you do not have ac or removing it...you dont need it...however, make sure your vents are where you want them inside the cab, because the controls will no longer work.

the vent controls will still function with the vacuum reservoir removed (provided you cap off the hose that goes to it). as i said, they will default to certain settings (via springs) when you mash the gas (your engine doesnt produce enough vacuum at wide open throttle to resist the tension of the return springs).

its sole purpose is to hold extra vacuum to keep the controls where you have them set during full throttle acceleration. thats why its called a vacuum reservoir.

THAT explains why my 2.9l is idling a little rough since the body swap was done--thanks for the info!
