I just hope I get out of (Carrollton) Dallas tomorrow night.
i am in midland.....so we will see.I just hope I get out of (Carrollton) Dallas tomorrow night.![]()
Thinking I'll go to World of Wheels at the Convention Center on Saturday and forget about Sunday. We got the ice this morning because of the misty rain last night. The flight line slick as hell. I almost fell on my last day on the job. The day isn't over yet though. Plenty of time to fall and get hurt.
if you have to run a farm....that is cheap....
to keep the chickens warm and just the house going....that is high dollar to run. but if you need a 50 hp tractor....you might need a generator that big.
Rick’s Hotlanta weather analysis:
snowmageddon 2026 starts the south’s ice age during worst ever global warming!
History: A couple years after I moved to Atlanta in 1979, when I worked in the open air chemical plant, it was below freezing for several days, then it went to 10 below zero (unbelievable hundred year+ low), and then we got like 6 inches of snow as the temperature went up to about 40°. The ground was cold or frozen when it started, so everything stuck and stayed, everything that contained water froze and broke when it went below zero, then everything started flowing when the temperature went up and you couldn’t get anywhere because 6 inches of snow in Atlanta is impossible to traverse. That’s all fact and history.
All the news channels who always predicted Atlanta would just have a few flurries were caught with their pants down. A lot of people and several companies sued the news media for not being prepared for what happened. Ever since then, every snowflake is an apocalypse in Atlanta, with the attitude it’s better safe than sorry, but Atlanta area governments actually did buy a little bit of snow fighting equipment.
So what’s going on now? Right now, 9:30AM Friday, it’s 50°. It’s supposed to be between 40° and 50° until about midnight on Sunday when it’s supposed to go down to 31°, and then go back up to a roller coaster between just above freezing and just below freezing all day on Monday, but plunging down to as low as 15° Monday night. 15° in Atlanta is incredibly cold, and there should be some wind.
For precipitation, it’s supposed to start a wintry mix about 8 o’clock on Saturday night for about 12 hours, and then turn to rain for 6-7 hours as the temperature will again be 40°.
Let me stop there a moment. The ground won’t be cold and won’t freeze. Saturday night to early Sunday afternoon will be a slushy wintry mix, but the temperature will rise to 40° at least, and the afternoon will be rain. I looked in my crystal ball, and anything snowy or icy that does hit the ground and stick around a little bit on Saturday night and early Sunday will probably be washed away by the rain Sunday afternoon. Monday night it will be as cold as a witch’s titty. If everybody lets their water drip on the outside walls during the coldest part, it should add up to a big fat nothing burger other than a sloppy inconvenience for 24 hours.
Next week there is a greater concern, but not snow or ice. While the weather is supposed to be dry, the temperature will swing between low teens to high of 35° or 40°. That really is incredibly cold in Atlanta. Again, the big preventative thing to do is to drip your faucets on outside walls. Most Atlanta housing is not built to handle that level of cold.
Other than putting a little rock salt in a 5 gallon pail out by the steep part of my driveway, I’m not planning on doing too much. I’ll make sure I’ve got a full whiskey bottle, a little bit of beer, and some healthy munchies, ‘cause I’m trying to lose weight.
I will have both tanks of the F250 diesel full and parked in a position to easily jump my downstairs furnace if the power goes off because of ice damage or trees falling on lines. I think that is unlikely, sporadic at best (here). I’ll have the Missing Linc facing outwards just in case.
A big disclaimer and a little advice: the reason we got hit so hard and 81 is partially because the weather was much worse than they could have predicted, and nobody knew it was coming. The weather predicting ability with satellites and such now is light years ahead of what it was, and all the weather agencies are pretty proactive in predicting what will happen, and the news media is doing a good job of advising people what to have ready and how to handle anything that does happen. My dissertation above is my opinion, I am not a weather expert, TRS does not endorse it or me in any way, and everybody needs to prepare themselves in accordance with the information they have where they live.
Don’t screw up, dripping your faucets: a common mistake when dripping faucets is that people drip the faucets when it goes down into the teens, but when it moves up into the 20s, they shut them off. Once it drops below 32°, anything exposed will continue to freeze until the temperature goes above 32°. If you drip your faucets, you should leave them dripping and dribbling until it is mid 30s or better outside.
On the rock salt, I won’t wait until snow or ice accumulates, I will start spreading it on the steep part of my driveway as any snow or ice comes down. It works much better if you divert it then if you try to melt it after the fact. It takes a little more salt, but. rock salt is cheap.
I will have food I can eat even if my power goes off. I will have warm clothing ready if my heat doesn’t work. You should do the same. You’ll eat the food anyway, and it’ll give you a chance to sort out your closet a little bit.
A few times I’ve been asked to help the police or fire folks in overwhelming situations, usually very simple traffic control things. I’ll be prepared for that just in case.
Today, since it’s warm, I’m going to wander into the shed of miracles and see if I can find any of the three sets of tire chains I still own, and see if any of them will fit on the Missing Linc’s 235/75/15 shoes. I have no plans to venture out unless I’m called, or if I have a friend in need.
I’ll post updates as and if anything changes. I hope this is helpful, or at least entertaining. I have prayed for all of you north and west of here that you are not hit too hard, and that you survive any difficulty with ease, and with great stories to tell.
There will be a quiz on all this on Tuesday
