Tired of "requesting a quote" - Truck caps

I set out today to get a ballpark figure for purchasing a cap for my extended cab Ranger and didn't find anything useful. Instead, I filled out a bunch of stuff and have to wait 48 hours for someone to call me with a quote.

So.... If you've got a cap on your Ranger, roughly how much did it cost? I'm not looking for anything with a whole bunch of extra options. We've got a large dog and I'd just like to be able to give him some extra room for long road trips. I know they also sell metal crates for the bed for this very purpose, but I'd like to explore this option first.

Thanks!

What year ranger? It's been my experience that people usually sell caps for next to nothing, unless you have something other than a standard bed.

Also, I would reconsider leaving a dog loose in the back of a truck. If you were to get in an accident, that dog could be seriously injured or worse. My brother's dog almost lost a leg from being in an accident and loose in the backseat of a car. The bed of a truck would be no different. IMO, the safest way to transport a pet is by restraining it to a crate or seatbelt.

I find them o Craigslist all the time in my area in good shape for $75-150 with all the hardware ready to mount. If you want it new try TopperKing if you have one in your area.

Eh, no big deal keeping them in the bed or in the cab. True, they can get hurt, but there really isn't an easy AND safe way to transport an animal with a mind of it's own.

Caps are cheap. Finding one that looks somewhat nice is more difficult though :) Too bad you're not in Austin, TX, i've got one i'd sell for cheap

As I said, if you restrain with a safety harness (attached to a seatbelt) or in a crate, you lessen the chances of having an injured pet. It won't matter how much of a "mind of its own" the dog has, if the dog can't go anywhere it wants.

2007 ranger

I should've clarified that a little I guess... I'm getting a hardshell plastic dog crate that they use for pets on airplanes. My main reason for wanting the cap is in case of rain and to cut down on the noise/wind otherwise.

What I want to avoid are the "all weather" aluminum dog crates for hunting because they're around $500 just for a single large dog. If I'm going to spend that, I'd rather spend it on a cap I can get more use out of.

I looked on Craigslist briefly, but didn't find a lot. Will a topper for an S-10 fit a Ranger? I figure it'd be close but I haven't looked up any dimensions yet (though somebody mentioned it above).

For a ranger? I've never bought one for more than $50. Most ranged from 15-30. Just keep an eye on craigslist and look for deals.

However, I've never SOLD one for less than 200. And I've sold six or seven.

I would never buy new, unless it was a odd size bed on an odd vehicle.

An S10 cap will fit, you can always test fit before you buy, if they say no tell them your not interested.

Here's my ranger with an S10 cap. By the way, if you ever decide you want roof racks on your cap just unbolt some from an explorer at the junkyard. They fit nice as you can see. Guy I sold this one two had a Sonoma. Fit fine.

And here it is with a generic 6' aluminum cap, which I sold to a guy with an S10. Fit fine.

Here it is with a highrise cap from an 80's ranger. Had trouble closing it, but it slammed shut just fine.

That one also fit on my brother's 01 Edge.

And here it is again with a cap off a Nissan Hardbody pickup.

As you can see alot of caps will fit. However Toyota caps have a different slant to them. They should fit your Ranger, but a Ranger cap will not for a Toyota (or older Mazda B)

That s10 cap dont look bad, however, a ranger cap looks terrible on an s10

We put a Leer cap on our company S-10. (fiberglass, raised roof, color matched, no other options.) Cost around $1300 with all fees, taxes, etc.

Why don't you actually go visit a store that sells truck accessories????

I will, but I live 45 minutes from the nearest even remotely large town that has any kind of a place like this, and it's the weekend so they're not open right now anyway. I'd like to get an idea of what I'm in for before I waste the gas and 2 hours of my time to go see some in person.

To put it in perspective, I just went to Wal Mart this afternoon and it was an hour and a half just in drive time...
