Timing question

Hello,

I have a 1994 Ranger with the 3.0 V6 and I would like to check the timing. I've picked up a used timing light and looked at the timing this morning. The question I have is what is the timing mark on the pulley suppose to line up with? I did some research and the images on line showed grooved degree marks. I don't see any groove marks. I have a protruding bump. So how do I determine it is 10 degrees off like the tag on the engine compartment reads?

First, I took a large wire brush and while engine running allowed the brush to "clean" the balancer so as to read the degree marks, then chalked the 10 degree line. as far as the pointer the bump you are talking about i believe is the pointer. next the "doo-hickie" (sorry cant remember the proper name) must be removed so as to acquire a proper reading, like back when we had vacuum advance and had to pull the vacuum line off of the distributor. if your "doo-hickie" is where mine is it will be between the battery and core support. the "doo-hickie" is yellow when clean.

Thanks, I'll look for the marks when I replace the water pump which has started to leak.

You need to pull the spout jumper to check the timing it kinna looks like a in line fuse.
