Ive been dealing with knocking under load for a while, and think it is a timing problem, the thing is i set the timing at 10 degrees btdc and it knocks, so i retarded it until theres almost no knock at all and ended up at 2-4 degrees btdc. Engine was rebuilt by PO, any chance something is not installed correctly so the real timing is more advanced than what marks show? Or any other ideas would be helpful

The 2.8 has timing gears and not a chain it runs best at 10*btdc base timeing. Have you looked at the knock senser it is in the block just in front of the starter. Trace the wires and look for shorts, burnt or broken wires and take the connector/s apart and clean them good with electrical cleaner. Then put them back together with dielectric grease and put the timing back at 10 degrees. You are checking the timeing with the spout wire disconnected correct?

Im sorry i didn't specify, it is converted to duraspark, so no spout and no knock sensor

Are you using the pointer or the round thing to check the timing. On mine the pointer got bent up giving me a false tdc. Once I bent it strait and set the timing at 10 degrees it runs like a champ. When you change the timing you need to adjust the idle air needles also.

Im using the pointer, and it looks very straight. I think distributor has been recurved, there was a very light spring and a very heavy one, and there was a stop in the advance before the heavy one started to stretch, so i replaced the heavy for a lighter one, now advance is continuous, but could it be the light one stretching too fast causing knock? My experience in mechanics is in this truck only, so i couldn't tell if it is advancing too fast...
