has anyone ran noisy timing gears in a 5.0? i have always liked the sound and was wondering if they are as reliable as a timing chain set.

You can also get some without the noise too. One thing about gears is you dont have to worry about a chain snapping, stretching, or somehow jumping a tooth.

Both do have there advantages/disadvantages though.

If the computer uses a knock sensor, dont run timing gears. The computer will "hear" the noise and retard the timing thinking the engine is pinging.

i dont think it has a knock senor. correct me if im wrong. its a 5.0 out of a 98 explorer. thanks for the info guys

The 5.0's with a knock sensor will have it located in the top rear of the block immediately behind the intake.

Timing gears cause a LOT of harmonics throughout the valvetrain. Valve train stability is directly proportional to reliability, longevity, and high rpm power. Harmonics from timing gears are basically vibrations that travel through your camshaft to the other valvetrain components, which hinders stability. You can't spin them as fast as a double roller chain, and they use more power. If they fail, it jams up causing more destruction than if a chain snaps. My advice is to run away from them. Hell, take your catalogs and rip out any page with these printed in it. lol You will find "noisy" gears ran only on wanna-be V8s to simulate a supercharger whine... but any professional or competent performance engine shop will run either a double roller chain or even better a jesel belt drive!
