i have a early 80's 302 with a dual sump oil pan and engine block entry for the oil dipstick. I just need to know if i can swap on a timing cover and be able to run the dipstick through it, in combination with the dual sump pan. The reason why i want to do this is because my headers are completly in the way to run the dipstick through the engine block, so id like to relocate it.

The front dipstick won't accurately tell you how much oil is in the rear sump, where the oil is drawn into the oil pump pickup tube. The front "sump" is really nothing other than a space for the oilpump, the oil there collects to the point till it runs up to and over the hump in the middle of the pan, into the rear sump. You can try it, but just be warned.

You want to use the pan dipstick. Like baddad said the front sump won't accurately tell you the oil level. Are you using a FRPP pan? If so you can unscrew the dipstick, install your headers and install and bend the tube as needed to make it work.

If you use the timing cover with the front dip stick setup, you'd better have a low oil level sensor that works because you'll never know what your oil level is with a dual sump pan.
Correct me if I'm wrong. -- Isn't the cover with the front dipstick also slightly deeper dimension than the others? Taking up room you may want between the engine and radiator? I may be wrong - just don't remember. :icon_confused:

The timing cover's basic dimensions are the same for all. The waterpump lengths can vary.
