Hi guys, I have a 89 Bronco 2 with the 2.9l. I recently pulled the engine and did a full overhaul, and sadly I did not take a picture of the cam and crank sprocket before I took the chain off. So fast forward to now, the engine is in the truck and i got it to run with an initial timing of 10degrees. The truck runs like junk and I’ve done everything from making sure the dizzy is at TDC-pulling the intake off and checking fuel injectors. I’m about to pull the timing cover off the truck and make sure my cam and crank are aligned BUT neither of my Haynes manuals have a diagram of where the sprockets should be. I’ve been coming home from college to try to get this thing finished but I’m at my literal wits end here..any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Side note- when I installed the timing chain I lined the small dots up on both sprockets, but I know the cam has marks for advance and retard and my research into which is which has gone nowhere

The image demon posted is correct for all pushrod Ford engines.

There is a dot on each sprocket, and you just point them at each other. Any advance/retard timing marks should have also been marked with a number denoting the degree from stock.

also remember cyl 1 on TDC valves closed should be compression stroke and marks should point to one another

Thanks guys! I’m putting it together as we speak. Just to clarify, I want both valves closed, cyl 1 tdc , and the next valve to open would be the exhaust stroke correct? Just so I don’t get it backwards

Yes. Tdc is end of compression stroke (spark plug is firing and big boom) so both valves should be 100% closed. On the beginning of the next upward stroke the exhaust valve will open.

That is correct, however achieving it shouldn't be an issue. The crank and cam on that engine should be keyed so that the dots won't line up unless the #1 piston is at TDC and both valves are closed.

If the cam and crank aren't connected via the chain, with the valves in neutral position the cam sprocket can only go on one way (without feeling the pressure of opening valves), but the crank and pistons can still be spun freely out of time. I've never had a pushrod engine that was magically lined up? You always need to set the dots.

Thanks again guys! I got it all put back together and running and driving “decently”, in my rush I accidentally loosened a fuel line and the engine caught fire today. “I love cars”, but back to square one here, just need to replace electrical connectors and vacuum lines and I should have it up and going again. This is the never ending project from hell ?. All that work on the timing and I have to get a new dizzy and all new sensors but that’s how she goes isn’t it
