So I found out my timing chain tensioner is making all the noise that I thought was the transmission(link). It's a loud whining sound coming from the back of the engine. basically my question is, is it possible to access the timing chain without removing the whole engine?

edit: So I can atleast get in there to lube it up or something.

Timing chain at the back of the motor?? first time i have heard that one. If it is your chain and it is in the front of the motor behind the water pump, then yes you should be able to rip apart the front end and replace it. Don't bother just lubing it for all the work to get at it doesn't make any sence. you will also need new gaskets. hope this might help you, I am guessing your truck is the 1997.

Yes, the OHV engine does not have a timing chain in the rear of the engine. You don't need to lube the chain or tensioner. They are suppose to be lubed by the engine oil and if they are not, you have another problem. If the chain tensioner is making noise, you will most likely need to replace it.
