Timing belt change interval according to Gates Belts is 120,000 miles for a 1998 2.5 Ranger.
 
That's correct. Inspect at 120K and replace if necessary is what all the books and software say I have. I wouldn't trust it to much though. I wouldn't go more then 80k with out checking it out my self.

age affects it also. if it is the original i would replace it before it leaves you stranded

I could never find the 120k recommendation from gates all i ever saw on their website was if the manufacturer did not have a recommendation gates recommended every 60k miles
