What engine?

a mechanic told me my 2.3 was toast after a timing belt breakage.........
it's a non-interference engine, changed belt, she's still running strong.

its a F/I 2.3L dual spark plug engine

thanks. but how do i adjust the timing since i cant put it on the same way since this one is snapped

thanks;

Ridiculously easy timing belt to change... I did mine in a parking lot when it snapped... all with hand tools I had with me. 18" breaker bar is perfect to fit in the frame rail, bump starter to break the crank bolt loose... grab a puller, pull the balancer off.. pull the 2? 8mm? bolts that hold the timing cover on... push the tensioner back, secure it, get the new belt on with marks lined up, let the tensioner do its work, snug that up... cover, then throw the balancer back on...

Easy parking lot work :-p

Also, kick your mechanic in the junk for me.
Nobody should ever tell "you" when "your" vehicle is no longer worth saving.
also for not knowing his own trade.

cool thanks. also do i have to put the cover back on? i would like to leave it off so i can see if the belt is getting bad before it snaps again.

thanks;

leaving the cover off exposes it to all dust, water, mud, anything, even a rock could get kicked up and ruin the belt. put the cover on. its not worth having it off. they genrally last 100k miles anyway. and since its a non interference motor, you could snap the belt all ya want and never kill the engine.

cool thanks. the truck only has 100k miles on it so there is alot of life left in it till i get started on a v8 swap.

thanks again;

Is it possible for you to post pics? If you can, try a couple of the belt at different angles...I've never had a metal on metal contact from changing a belt...unless you've left a wrench on the crankshaft somehow...or put something in backwards...like the tensioner...

ill try to get pics later but it feels there is binding at the camshaft even with the belt off. what could cause that?

also how do you guys aligned you pulleys?
