timeing belt

Can anyone tell me if changing the timeing belt is a hard job? I really want to change mine before going on a road trip. the truck has 140k on it and don't think it has been changed.

It really depends on how mechanical you are. I've changed mine out so many times I can probably do it in under an hour if I tried.

Just get yourself a good manual (Haynes, Chilton) and go for it, if it looks like something you could do. If you need any help just shoot me a pm. Later.

I wasn't sure if I was up to the task of changing a timing belt (changing out an alternator was about the most serious piece I've done), so I went out and did it with my Father-in-law who's a GM Mechanic. It's definitely not hard, I was just not confident in re-timing the engine if I rotated a sprocket. I'm pretty confident I could do it myself, just get a manual like Allen said or go look it up in Autozone's online repair manual- both are about the same.

No, a timing belt tensioner is what the timing belt actually rides on. It has a pulley on it and is just replaced. I recommend replacing it when the timing belt gets changed as well.
