I have my replacement motor and the old is ready to come out. What are the steps to separate the trans from the engine. Any special tools? Everything is off the engine but exhaust and trans. What is the sequence from here? I heard the engine run and the seller said he installed the engine 1-2 years ago after being rebuilt. (Truck got totaled) I have a new water pump for the new engine but I freaking about snapping any of the bolts in the new engine. I guess this would be the time to change it???

Removing hood will make things easier

Remove exhaust manifolds, better to break bolts now then after it is in.
Or leave them on and remove collector flange nuts to disconnect exhaust pipes.

Put jack under trans
Hook engine hoist to heads/block

Remove starter motor(assuming battery is disconnected :))
Remove inspection plate on bell housing, unbolt pressure plate or torque converter.
You need to rotate crank for this so make sure spark plugs are out and manual trans is in Neutral.

Trans and engine support each other, so back of engine and front of trans need to be supported before unbolting them, take up some weight with engine hoist and jack.
Unbolt bell housing from block.
Watch the weight and alignment

Remove Motor mount bolts, you need the engine to move forward to separate it from the transmission so remove the motor mount bolts that will allow it to move forward without having to be lifted too much.
Remove fan/clutch, if you haven't already

Slide engine forward while lifting it out.

Just as a heads up, when you lift the engine off the frame, the frame and body will raise up because the weight of the engine is no long on the suspension.
This can create a problem if the engine hoist can't raise the engine high enough to clear the body.
So start with engine hoist arm as low as possible, shortest chains or straps possible.

If you get stuck, chain or strap trans to body, remove jack and use it to raise front end and then remove the front tires and lower body down enough to get engine out.
