Time to look for a new motor?

Well I think the little 2.3 in my 95 Ranger has had it. It has well over 350,000 miles on it and it's got oil blowing through the valve cover, through the rubber hose and into the intake. It's all in the air cleaner as well.

I just looked under the hood right now because I just washed the old girl and saw that oil's been blowing out of the dipstick tube as well.

I recently (2-3 months ago) swapped out the tranny and while I was there I decided to change out leaking seals and gaskets in the engine, along with the PCV valve, plugs, and other normal wear items.

What causes this type of oil leakage, and has this motor just had it because of the miles? Thanks.

sounds like blowby, increased crankcase pressure due to trashed or worn out piston rings mainly

Thanks buddy!

I thought it was going to be something along those lines but was'nt exactly sure, with all the miles on the engine and all. Time to get another I guess.

also if the PCV is plugged up or stuck it can cause that also, the PCV should be pulling all the extra pressure right out through it that way...

id say with 350,000, you should just let her go and start over. its lived its life

Yeah, I fought with my 88 2.0 for about 6 months trying to resolve the same type of issue...turned out to be a cracked piston...found that out when I swapped heads...replaced the short block and it went away...

Even though you've replaced the PVC I'd say check it over once again...make sure you have vacuum on the inlet to the TB when you rev it up...I found so much crud in the base of the carb that there was no suction on the tube to the PVC...cleaning out the gunk helped quite a bit but it returned on my unit (maybe because the EGR never worked right and the gunk was building up in the vent holes)...

Oh, well, if you've changed out the tranny replacing the engine should be a snap...and that 2.5 you were looking at would work nicely...

Ok, thanks guys. I'll look into the PVC even though it's relatively new. You never know right?

Either way, I'll probably pick up that 2.5 and swap it really soon. Lack of power and other issues related to piston ring wear are pretty evident here as well. I just want to swap it before I start having fouling plug problems you know?
