Hey guys,

Well I found the culprit of my strong gas smell. There is a gas leak somewhere on my carburetor. When the engine is running and I place my finger under the carb and the fuel filter my finger is saturated with gas. The fuel filter is new and tightened very snug. I'm thinking there may be some bad seals on other parts of the carb. Photo 2 shows where gas may be coming from. Photo 3 shows possible bad seals and how saturated the area is?

What are your opinions?

It's hard to tell where it's leaking from the picture. The fuel filter to carburetor gets tightened to 6.5-8 ft lbs and the fuel line to filter gets tightened to 15-18 ft lbs. it is also recommended to apply one drop of loctite hydraulic sealant to the external threads of the filter.

One thing about aftermarket carburetor parts for these, they're terrible.

From the stains, the accelerator pump diaphragm could be leaking. Do a search on eBay for e3zz-9b559-a or cm-4026. It's a simple replacement.

Your power valve may also be leaking, pull the black vacuum line between it and the egr spacer. If the line smells like gas, replace it (requires removing the carburetor). The part you want is d5az-9a565-a (ce-106).

Something else, the vacuum line to the control valve for the temperature compensated accelerator pump is not connected. It should be a light blue, plastic line. There should be vacuum present during most driving conditions, so this will be giving you a vacuum leak.

Rebuild because there may be other problems as well; that's what I would do.

Advice from Randy B is excellent.

While I'm here, I've done many carbs over the years and for some reason, these are the only ones I've had any problems with. Just be careful, go slow and it will woek out fine.

Does your motor still have the original carb set up for the 2.8? Meaning it's the computer controlled IAC and stuff ? I have mine from when I did the Duraspark conversion I would sell cheap if you want. It was rebuilt about 3 years ago and just sitting on my bench, distributor too if you want. Just thought I'd let you know in case you wanted a spare carb and dist.

Yeah I may be interested in that. Can you PM with more info?

Thanks,
