My credo
I need more sleep.
Recently with my weird power steering issues I found that one of the tie rod ends was getting worn out. The boot was broken and it was really easy to play around with. I picked up a 20 dollar replacement, this one is actually grease able which is nice, I put it on pretty easy and filled it up with grease.

The other one still looks good.

Not a bad idea to replace things like that in pairs, just for peace of mind.

And if it's only 20 bucks, well.........

Yep. I always replace things like that in twos. If ones still good well, now you have a spare just in case.

The only reason to replace steering components like that in pairs, if one is still good, is so you only have to align it once, IMO.

I might do it sometime when my parents are gone, I really wanted to replace both. My dad kept telling me it was a waste and and the other one is still good. And that I shouldn't be wasting money and saving it for college. I tried to tell him it was 20 bucks but whatever. It just worries me that if this one went out, the other one is not soon to follow. And it just drives me nuts that I have one new one, and one old one. So I'll just do it later. Its pretty easy to do.

About 5 years ago I replaced one bad tie rod end on my truck. Two years ago when I did the front axle and installed the steering links that were with it the other end was still good.

Just because one went does not mean the other is about to. The passenger side gets beat up worse because it is the one hitting the edge of the road and all the potholes all the time.

That is something you may need to see a shrink about.

Frankly, your dad is right. It may be only $20, but if you don't piss it away replacing good parts then it's $20 you have to do something else.
