its ticking it kinda sounds like lifter noise  does any one else kno what it is also has any one else had this problem.

Take a look at your rockerhaft assemblies/pushrods for wear. but if you want to check out your lifters itll cost you abit in gaskets. You have to remove the heads to get at the lifters. My engine use to tick and i cleaned out the lifters with brake cleaner and now it sounds great, but i also had to replace the heads and rockerarms/pushrods (prettyworn) so i was in that deep anyway.Top end gasket kits cost about 150 to 200$. And youll need new head bolts about 50$ you need to ask yourself what plan of attack you want to take and how far you want to go.

since when do you need to remove the heads to get the the lifters? upper and lower intake manifolds and valve covers should be all that needs to come off.

doubt its a lifter noise, most likely rockers and push rods. U'll know when its a lifter noise because it will stick and you'll be like wtf was that.

i had "ticking" someone told me to put synthetic oil in it...i did...no more ticking. i dont know if this helps.

well my shop teacher told me it was injector noise and to not worrie about it

Did your shop teacher actually walk out, pop your hood and listen? It doesn't take much to decipher a injector "tick" as compared to a pushrod/rocker arm tick, but to the untrained ear, they very well possibly could be mistaken.

Um....

I'm pretty sure the heads HAVE to come off in order to remove the lifters on any "Cologne" engine. They do on a 2.9 (same engine family) Although i've never dealt with noisy lifters on a 4.0 (it's usually worn pushrods/rockers)

Maybe the procedure for removing lifters on a 3.0 doesn't require removal of the heads.........?

as far as i've seen, the heads must come off.

When i was at pick n pull, i was pissed that the heads had to be off cause the exaust bolts were snapping off so i had to pry the heads to each side with the y-pipe still attached to grab those suckers out. What a bitch that was!

i was asking because i didnt know. from what i remembered the lifters could come out without pulling the heads...and my haynes manual concures. appearantly thats not the case :dunno:

Yeah....the heads have to come off.

I wasn't trying yo be a smart ass or anything....

I'm pretty sure the heads have to come off any 60-degree engine to access lifters. FWIW, most Haynes/Chiltons books have pretty generic procedures in their "general engine overhaul" sections. (some Ford versions actually show SBC engines in the pictures!)

the lifters come out of the 3.0 with the heads on.

i know haynes manuals suck...it just seemed to agree with my foggy memory :icon_twisted:

The heads can stay on with a 3.0? Good design feature.

I'm mostly a 2.9/4.0 fan (never had an RBV with a 3.0 though) But now youve got me wondering.........:D
