ticking when braking

ok I bought a 2000 ranger XL 4x4 last week and when I am slowing down for a red light, right after it downshifts into 1st(auto), I hear a ticking noise in the driver side front end area. any ideas as to what it could be? it has the 3.0L flex motor.
