when i start my engine my valves start ticking and after it warms up it starte knocking. i dont kno what the hell is going on. is she going to die? please help me

the ticking is normal for 2.9's, they just dont get the oil the need to the top end. i use hyper lube and it hardly ever ticks. the knocking is not a good thing. is it a rod knock? where in the motor is this knocking comein from?

The ticking and the knocking are they distinguishable between each other?

Sort of like lucas, or so i'm told. Never used it myself. I'll stick to lucas.

i have had 3 bronco II's and a ranger, all 87-88 models. heres my experience and opinion on the lifter noise, i have torn down 4, 2.9's in the last bit. 3 of these had the lifter noise and 1 didnt.
ok, the 3 that pecked all had the rod bearings worn to the copper, and the one that didnt peck the rod bearings were fine .
so imo the rod bearings are a lot of the cause for the lifter noise instead of the cam bearings.
i rebuilt one that pecked awful when on the 4 lane. the rod bearings were to the copper. replaced rod and mains, new rings, never replaced cam or bearings. i drove it for 5 yr all quiet and ran excellent then same pecking started again.
pulled engine and upon teardown, rod bearings to the copper again.
too much bottom clearance resulting in low pressure thus starving the top end.
i have an 87 ranger now that oil light flickers at idle and is pecking bad, im gonna tear it down shortly and i bet the rod bearings are shot.

That is interesting to hear. my 2.9 started ticking for the first time the very second that i had a rough down-shift.(new driver:buttkick:) before that it didn't tick at all. i replaced lifters and pushrods. adjusted backlash on valves. used oil treatments and nothing worked to get rid of the tick. so would a rotten downshift cause the tick and the semi-simple remedy is a bottom end rebuild?

My 2.9 would tick at cold startup and anytime I beat the living piss out of it when it was still cold, a couple times I held it at 5-6K while it was cold and it would start ticking, it would always eventually go away though. Can't hurt to check out the bottom end. An oil pressure gauge will give you a good idea what's going on, mine always had 60 PSI warm oil pressure.

is it possible to change the main bearings without taking out the whole crank? can I just slide one half up into the block with the crank still in place?
