my 5 speed makes a whining noise when the clutch pedal is out and the truck is in neutral. I replaced the clutch last month and noticed a little wear on the face of the old throwout bearing. I'm in the process of replacing the transmission, because of a different more destructive sounding noise, and I noticed the new throwout bearing also has a little wear on the face. I'm thinking the throwout bearing spring isn't compressed enough to keep the bearing away from the pressure plate. How far from the slave cylinder should the face of the bearing be? Mines all the way to the splines of the input shaft (FM145 transmission) when its fully extended on the bench.

make sure you put a thin film of lithium based, NOT petroleum based, grease on the face of the throwout bearing before assembly as well. this is often overlooked.
