when i replaced my oil pan gasket on the 1994 4.0 i just lifted the engine (no trans) thought i had 1 of the 2 engine mount bolts on, but i was wrong. the engine shifted and tore the throttle cable right where it comes out of the firewall. the cable itself is still good, but the housing is bad, and the wires around it are frayed. its causing the throttle to stay open partly and its sticking.

i tryed trimming the housing and making it work but its not much better. are these rebuildable? could i use like some bicycle brake line or something for the housing?

i also tryed to just remove it but, i couldnt get the black plastic piece out of the firewall with a screw driver or plyers, the do just pry out, and push in?

pull and save is 120 miles away, the local junkyards dont even have it listed.

You can probably use a throttle cable from any other Ford around that year... just make sure it's not shorter than what you have and it should work.

I don't know about rebuilding it. I wouldn't bother, just try to find another one.

I actually rebuilt a spare with a bicycle brake cable and it worked for the time I needed it. Problem is the cables are too long and you need to cut them and then either drop a bead of welding stick on the end or otherwise attach something that will stop the cable from going through the end point.

I found those "cable bobble ends" as I called them that worked great. They are just balls with a hole through them and a screw that comes in from the side and when tightened it clamps the cable in place so it stays in place.

I posted pics of them a long time ago but my photobucket is wonky and posting is a pain right now.

If you know what I'm talking about I know they had them at a NAPA store and I picked some up...got some somewhere if I can find them I will post the pic...

i do know what your talking about. idk that i need to go that far tho. the cable is still good. just the housing is garbage, the cable now drags on the housing. im gonna see if i can make the cable from my junk saturn work for the mean time.

I also used one from a Mustang once but getting it out was much harder than a Ranger. And it didn't quite work out the same because the attachment to the throttle is slightly different...

Mine broke on the way home one day and I ended up attaching a spare cable to it but it was really hard to pull and and drive because I had to use my hand instead of the foot pedal...surprising how much that pedal reduces the muscle power needed.

if that pickup was a manual i bet that was a hoot to drive home!

Oh, yes, it was a regular hoot...lol

I didn't realize how much the cable could dig into my hand and ended up pulling over and putting on a leather glove...still hurt even through the glove...

But I made it and that was the important thing. Saved myself $100 for a tow and learned to keep the proper spare parts and to make sure they would work in emergency situations.

I did that hand throttle trick on a 99 Cougar once when the throttle cable broke. Fortunately, it was an automatic but was still kind of tricky to drive. My wife thought I was crazy.

The dealer still had them available at the parts department so it was not too difficult to replace it.

If the cougars are anything like the Mustang I'm sure you appreciate how easy the Ranger is to change the same part.

Call your local yard and see if they have a Ranger with your eng trans combo.

Believe it or not parts like that for fords are a major PITA to match up. It's almost like they did each one as a one off.

But if they still have an eng and trans still in the truck you might get lucky.

If not shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can help you find.

my buddy works at the local yard, said they have like 80 rbv's there hes just gonna snag me one out of a 4.0 rig.

check the cable housing under that rubber hose to see if it is still good.
when i did mine i had to pull like 5 or 6 to find a good one and this is arizona.

then i removed the rubber hose because it will hold water and rot out the housing.
