ok this is for info that i feel that might save some of you some headaches.
this pertains to a 94 ranger with a 4.0L replacement cable is out of a 93 explorer
my observations as to why cables go bad
1 cracks in plastic coating on outer cable housing at the firewall side where rubber hose is at.
2 rubber hose conceals cracks and holds water allowing outer housing to rust.
my solution to fix
1 obtain a good used cable (i had to pull 5 at the junkyard before finding a good one) cable i got had a few cracks so i coated it with brush on electrical tape about 5 thick coats as a water barrier.
2 lubed cable and cut rubber hose off.
3 installed
hope this helps
