long story short. finally going to be getting around to swapping in a bw1354m transfer case in the next few weeks.

I got the interior gutted - unbolted seats, got all the nasty 22+ year-old carpet out, and the floor vacuumed and cleaned. I did this to swap over a factory access panel with the slot already cut out for the linkage/shifter assembly.

I noticed the driver side floor pan is a little rusty - not too bad though. I thought it would be a lot worse. ( the old carpeting and insulation was still damp). The passenger side and back of cab were not bad at all.

I would like your thoughts on POR 15 (or similar products) to use over the entire floor area to help prolong the life of the metal. I would also like to use a rubber/vinyl flooring or a diy bedliner over top of the POR 15.

(mods not sure if this is the right section as it covers a couple different topics - feel free to move if necessary)

This looks awful familiar. I have Chassis Saver which I have used in several areas and it is fantastic. For my floor pans, I used brushed Monstaliner on the inside after replacing the driver's side floor pan and then I sprayed it on the outside. Worked great so far. They recommend putting Chassis Saver down first if the rust is really bad because it chemically bonds to rust and seals it from further oxidation.

Here are some photos:

I am really happy with the results and Monstaliner is great stuff! Look at the last few pages of my build thread if you want more details.

I sprayed the undercarriage with bar and chain oil after the liner dried for further rust protection

your floor is nice i think your headed in the right dierection

for the money tractor supply has a gray primer that is cheaper and works as well if not better than por 15, in a quart can size it weights twice as much [ not much science here but check with ohbummer on that] prep the area that the paint is going on CLEAN with degreaser,,,,,,, my floor was not in as good of shape as you have [ had holes,,, welding rust is a pain] i agree the carpet holds to much water not good for the floor, i found a oem mat in my local parts mail [ bone yard] for off road nonsense cleaning the mat is faster and easier your dudeness not all who wander are lost

thanks. i'll look into monstaliner. I also spray the entire undercarriage with used motor oil 3-4 times a year.

POR 15 is great stuff. It has a rust converting catalyst and dries rock hard. If its going to be in the sun you have to topcoat because UV rays will break it down, but you won't have that problem on your floors. Just use all you can of what you buy because the small can is about 50 bucks. Humidity helps it cure, so to store leftovers the best way is to put thin plastic over the top of the open can, beat the lid on, and put it in the fridge. I've had half a can in there for about two years and its still good. A can that's been opened won't last too long sitting on a garage shelf.:icon_thumby:

I ordered some por-15 and the metal ready. I will update when I get the floor coated and the bw1354m transfer case swapped in:headbang:.

it probably wont be for a few weeks, now is not the time to try and paint outdoors, but we will see what happens if I get a stretch of some warmer weather.

Update...

I got the driver side floor pan coated and swapped in the 1354m!!

Pictures will be up soon.

por 15 is good stuff, we did a new bed swap on my dad's superduty and while the old box was off we did the frame of the truck. just wear gloves, it wont come off your hands once it dries, has to wear off...took 2 weeks to wear off mine...next im going to coat a '46 ford tractor with the stuff before painting it....

My truck is a former survey crew truck so it was run hard and put away wet (and muddy) on a regular basis and probably almost never washed.

Oddly though, it doesn't have a LOT of rust underneath (the wheelwells on the bed have no rust whatsoever and the front fenders are almost perfect) but it has some areas like near the front of the bed underneath that are rusted bad enough to where it is flaking off.

I'm thinking about picking up some por-15 to slap on those areas and keep them from getting worse.
