Backpressure is a really bad term for it, you really want to maintain the proper velocity.
My exhaust on my F-150 helped a tad with it downshifting on hills, I drive the very same 60 mile routine on a rural highway both ways each week and noticed it eliminated most of the pointless downshifts (like when you are 100' from the top of the hill) Milage stayed the same on the highway though, and dramatically dropped around town as it is fun to listen too.
Like I said it helped a little bit, but that alone wasn't worth the $500 I paid for it, but as far as customizations go it has been one of the most rewarding to date as I get to enjoy it whenever I drive my truck. Although I would probably take it do a different shop, I would gladly do it again.
Things feel a lot faster when you can hear the effort they are putting out, unless you timed the Chevy before and after keep in mind the butt dyno is easily fooled, and the HD probably has lower gearing as well...
Dunno what to tell you for your 3.0, but I was happiest with the sound of a Walker Turbo muffler on my 2.8, I could JUST tell that it was running at idle from the drivers seat.. Some engines should be seen and not heard... imo V-6's are one of them. The glasspack I had on there was downright offensive, but at least once I got going about 45mph the tires would drown it out.
