Ignition mod and coil
"powerplantranger",
Those Ford ignition modules go bad for a squirrel crossing the road. If your trusted mechanic affiliate found your coil weak and helped you take care of it, I would put him/her on my Christmas card list (which is very, very short).
You can always ask for the old parts, perform a couple of resistance checks and "know" whether that mechanic is your friend or if you are paying for a summer trip to Burmuda.
I always ask for a phone call prior to any work other than the agreed upon troubleshooting and always take home the old parts.
I have replaced 5 ignition modules and 3 coils. If your mechanic didn't suggest a better coil to use you may want to poke-em in the chest so that next time he is looking out on the "upgrade component concept". The Ford modules aren't very reliable but demand a high price tag; the Ford coils aren't the best performers, do last a while but there are better products on the market for the same or less $$$.
I haven't bought an ignition module in years but when I originally used either the Ford replacement part or what they were dealing at the local car parts store. I later found them in the JC Whitney catalog. I tried one, found out the Ford and local retail versions die too often and bought 3 more from JC Whitney. I have only had to use 2 of the 4 as they are a superior product.
Coils; MSD, Hypertech and Accell make plug and play replacement coils that claim higher voltage. I have used all 3 and have the most mileage on the Accell. Crane also makes coils that will work also. Several of these are commonly stocked at the major autoparts stores in the $45-55 range.
Good luck!
