This is how to put block heater in a 4.0.

Hey guys, so i had thrown out teh box, and no longer have the number. I tried calling the local dealership where i got it, but they couldnt get me a number. Just go to any ford parts place and ask for the 'aftermarket" block heater, its about 50$ cheaper than the ford one.

So called up my distribution center and asked about this and was told that since i dont already have a block heater, i would need the kit one that comes with the stuff to plumb it and wire it into the dash? thats about all the info the guy on the phone gave me, make since to anyone?

hey that makes NO sense. There is one cord that plugs into teh heater itself, that has a standard plug on teh end. There is NO other wiring.

Very nice post! I want to add that there is a certain direction that the heating element needs to point when it's installed. Like someone else was saying earlier... check the directions that come with the part, for the specific frost plug and orientation of the heating element. It may or may not be a big deal, but I've put in a bunch of these things, on a variety of engines and they all are specifically designed for each aplication.
They only need to be plugged in for 1-4 hours before starting...it all depends on the temperature. Also, in my opinion, engine heaters of any kind will not only make for easy cold starts and faster cab heat but allow for better lubrication during that critical first few seconds after start-up.
My '04 4.0 with 237k on all original drivetrain seems to like it!

Ford part number is XL5Z-6A051-AA IIRC, not sure about the Motorcraft part number but any half decent ford counterman should be able to change it up, since I'm not at work I can't. I'll be getting one for my truck tomorrow so if I remember I'll post it up.

Just Picked up a Napa Branded Heater (P/N 11416). Going in this weekend. Gonna use this and their paragraph of directions to but that bad boy in.

They were thinking of a tank heater, which is a tubular thing that mounts outside the engine and circulates the coolant throughout the engine as it heats it.

The Caddy of engine heaters, they warm up an engine much quicker than a block heater.

Think again, the "Tank Heater" heats the water in the radiator tank, the radiator then cools it.
The "Block Heater" puts the heat in the block... where you want it.

The tank heater caught on because it doesn't require pulling a freeze plug, just splice it into the coolant hose. I've done both and there is a big difference.

The coolant heater that patches into the heater core lines is the best, they work best with a timer though as they get everything really hot.

Just bought a block heater. Cant wait for it to get here. Do I really need one here in Oklahoma? Probably not but it will nice to have one since my drives are usually short and the truck doesnt have time to warm up.
