So, I have been working on one truck for most of the last week now.

It has an oil leak. No big deal right? Wrong. 6.4L leaking from the bed plate to block gasket. That means, pull the cab, yank the engine out, set it on a stand, and then flip it over to replace the gasket. No, all that is really necessary, that's just the EASY WAY to do it.

Anyway, one of the guys I work with said he had a stand that we could put this thing on since the shop didn't. He went home and looked up the specs. It was rated for 300 lbs less than the 6.4 weighs. No good.

So we order one, get rush shipping on it and it was supposed to be there Friday morning. 5:00 Monday rolled around, and still haven't seen hide nor hair of it.

I just want to get this truck done before I forget where all the bolts go since this is the first time I've had to take a cab off.

It's because of global warming.

No, really it is.

Our FedEx delivery Friday and Saturday never showed up. Not a good way to make people happy.

sounds like the stories I've heard from mechanics at supercar dealerships... wanna replace the clutch on a veyron? split the car in half. no big deal, right? just disconnect the electronics from the dash and fish the wires through(since they go with the back half). all without damaging someones really expensive car.

Same as a tractor, been routine for them darn near forever. :icon_thumby:

not very many wires on a tractor tho.. unless its a new john deere, fully loaded including iPod hookup :icon_rofl:

All the new ones have a lot of wires. :icon_thumby:

Since it is kind of a routine thing they usually have a way to disconnect them rather than fishing thru the firewall though. Still a very decent sized job to do, and usually the guy is screaming bloody-murder because he needs to get back to the field.

well he said it had been that routine forever.. and the 1946 ford red belly I have... doesn't have many wires. :yahoo::icon_rofl:

Splitting for a clutch job is what I meant, and you do have to split a 2N Ford for a clutch.

Yeah, so we finally found out what happened to the engine stand.

FORD never shipped it. Now they can't figure out why we are so upset since it's probably gonna cost us a 0 score on the customer satisfaction survey for this job, which they push BTW.

We did manage to get the engine out and reseal the bottom end.

mine's an 8N and just got gave to me by my father. so i aint done any work on it yet.

How much did it weigh? Harbor freight has 1000lb engine stands for $50.00 all day long.

Well, I don't know exactly how much it weighs, but one of our guys has a stand that he's had a 5.9 Cummins on, and the 6.4L outweighs that stand's rating by 300 lbs. Gonna guess it's more than 1000 lbs.

What I don't understand is why you just didn't flip the truck upside down with the engine in it.:icon_rofl:

We still would have had to pull the frame apart. That was roughly what we were trying to avoid in the first place.

Well, the 6.4 is just a glorified 6.0, and I know that the 6.0 heads weight 85 lbs a piece. There is a warning label on them when you get a new one.
